This 1997 portrait by Richard Avedon appeared in the August 9th New Yorker's "Portfolio" section, which is a photo essay titled "The Sixties". Photographs by Richard Avedon and Doon Arbus are combined with a few paragraphs of quotes from the subjects. The full-page photograph above ends the 16-page spread, which includes Janis Joplin, Abbie Hoffman, and other luminaries of that era.

The August 10th Village Voice ran a 3-paragraph review of the July 28th Dylan/Simon show at Madison Square Garden. The review by Richard Gehr is brief and unillustrated.
The following paragraph is from the August 16th issue of TIME magazine:
Bob Dylan took the stage first in his joint outing with Paul Simon at Jones Beach Theater in New York on July 31, and he put on a show that was hard to follow. Dylan's voice, as it has been for some years, was like a ragged flag blowin' in the wind, but his spirit was strong, and his guitar playing commanding. Simon accompanied him for a few duets, including a bulked up The Sounds of Silence. But, by the time Simon began his solo set, it was all anti-climax. He put on a fair performance, but he was in the presence of an eclipsing talent. Now Simon must know how Art Garfunkel felt all those years.
The paragraph is illustrated with a small photo of Dylan and Simon.
