Stories In The Press
July 2000

A selection of photos in July's Dylan-related media articles.

The July 17th New Yorker contained a spoof of Dylan's upcoming HBO special, in which all of Dylan's lines were "unintelligible".

The July 29th issue of Entertainment Weekly had a short Dylan article on the last page. It was about Dylan's historic July 25, 1965 appearance at the Newport Folk Festival where Dylan went electric and shocked the crowd by playing rock and roll. The first song in his set was "Maggie's Farm" followed by "Like a Rolling Stone" and "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry". Peter Yarrow summed it up pretty good: "Far from courting his audience (Dylan} was always challenging himself, and the audience, to rediscover what it was that could be shared through music".

Noted Dylan scholar Greil Marcus has an article on Salon: "Real Life Rock Top Ten", in which number 10 is "Bob Dylan: The American Troubadour," the recently aired Biography special featuring Bob Dylan.

A comparison of Dylan and Brian Wilson has some interesting facts.

At Masslive.com, an interesting article titled "Bob Dylan reckless, refined".

Plenty of concert reviews were published this month, here's a bunch:

One of many reviews praising Dylan and panning Lesh is at the Washington Post: "Bob Dylan Stradivarius of a second fiddle".

More bad press for Lesh and good for Dylan: "Dylan was Dylan, Lesh a bit dead"

From CTNow.com: "Old dog, new tracks"

Washington Post review of Bob Dylan and Phil Lesh

From the Chicago Tribune: "Dylan Feeds Off Energy of Dueling Guitarists"
